In something reminiscent of Fidel Castro’s Cuba, President Obama has told congressional leaders that, as Politico puts it, “They will gather daily until a deal is reached.”
So much for compromise or reaching across the aisle.
Like a spoiled little brat, Obama wants what Obama wants, even if it flies in the face of logic, the Constitution, and his own ever self-serving words made just back in December when he approved the Bush tax cuts for another two years after the humiliating drubbing he took in the 2012 mid-term elections.
Back then, he said the deal helped “entrepreneurs who have been waiting to invest in their businesses” to “expand, buy new equipment or make upgrades – freeing up other money to hire new workers.” And back in 2009, he had this to say on raising taxes during tough times: “Normally, you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes… You don’t raise taxes in a recession.”
So why is he now changing his song and dance to the tune of $1 trillion in tax increases?
Well, duh! The economy is doing just fine now. Everybody can see that.
… Except for the recent grads who are still living with mom and dad because they can’t find work, the small businesses struggling to stay afloat since consumers continue to limit their expenditures, the black middle class seemingly slipping away into poverty, and all of the tough luck cases counted and not counted in the government’s 9.2% unemployment figure.
But other than all of them, America is doing peachy! Thanks for asking.
The truth is, however, even if the U.S. economy was actually growing and the government actually needed more tax revenue for something other than destroying this nation’s sense of self through socialism… Even then, Obama would not and should not have the authority to detain Congress in this manner.
This is, after all, a republic, not a dictatorship. And it’s high time Obama figured that out.
