I’m going to sound like an absolute jerk. I know I am, but here goes anyway…
I don’t know why Shirley Sotloff thinks her video pleading for her son Steven Sotloff’s release is going to have any effect on his terrorist captors.
This is after Islamic State militants made their own video beheading U.S. journalist James Foley, then showing Steven Sotloff as the next victim up if their demands weren’t met. It’s those horrific animals that she poignantly and pointlessly argues with, explaining to the camera that her son is “an honorable man and has always tried to help the weak.”
I’m very sorry for her. And I’m very sorry for her son. Clearly, I have no idea what either of them are suffering emotionally or physically.
… But what makes her think that the Islamic State cares? I mean this question in all sincerity.
Along with producing a graphic and slow decapitation as a propaganda piece, the Islamic State is also kidnapping women from religious minorities and intimidating them into marriages with traditional Muslims.
It just executed dozens of fleeing Syrian soldiers.
And according to the AFP, a United Nations probe revealed that “public executions, amputations, lashings and mock crucifixions have become a regular fixture in jihadist-controlled areas of Syria.”
But we think we can reason with them? We think they’ll care about those who are “honorable” and try “to help the weak?”
Again, I know I sound like a jerk. But I think Sotloff, like too many other Westerners, are fostering a very dangerous mentality.
These people are evil. They have quite literally, deliberately and happily sold their souls to the devil. Not to say that they’re entirely irredeemable, only that they’re humanly unreachable.
So we’re only hurting ourselves pretending that we can reason with these terrorists.
We can’t. They’ve blatantly and horrifically proved as much time and time and time and time and time and time and time and time again.
So how about we either start begging God for one of the biggest miracles in history… or we annihilate these terrorists already.
Without one of those solutions, they’re not going to stop. No matter how many heartfelt videos we make.
