Let’s
talk about what’s wrong with society.
Yeah,
I know. I know. Again?
Yes,
again. Because there’s so much to say on the topic! Which is more than sad.
Sad
like an explosion that covered three buildings in New York City’s East Village,
killing two people and injuring 22. And sad like people taking smiling selfies
in front of the scene.
There
were at least two examples of such that surfaced after the blast, one of a
bunch of twenty-something women, and one of Christina Freundlich making the
peace sign with the Instagram caption: “Scene of the accident.”
Any
human being with any decency or common sense should have known that was a bad
idea. But Freundlich has even less of an excuse considering that she was the
communications director for the Iowa Democratic Party not that long ago.
Communications!!!
She’s
supposed to understand the ins and outs of that subject, including little
social taboos about drawing positive attention to oneself when other people are
physically injured.
People
freaked out on her on Instagram, with some of them using some very heavy
language. While the professional side of me wants to say something about how
you can make a point without resorting to immature word choices, the I’m-sick-of-self-focused-idiots
side of me doesn’t care that she got torn to emotional shreds.
Freundlich
has since told the Des Moines Register
that she learned her lesson: “It was inconsiderate to those hurt in the crash
and to the city of New York. What happened last week in the East Village is not
to be taken lightly, and I regret my course of action.”
But
I’m not willing to let her off the hook so quickly. She should have recognized
that fact before she took that stupid selfie. She has no excuse for ignoring
the obvious until other people were inconsiderate to her.
Wake up and smell the
suffering, people. It isn’t just about you.
